Why Reiki?

What is Reiki and how does it work?

Reiki is defined by the Oxford English dictionary as:-

A healing technique based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into the patient by means of touch, to activate the natural healing processes of the patient’s body and restore physical and emotional well-being”.

The Japanese word ‘Reiki’ literally translates as universal life force energy. This natural system of healing was developed by Mikao Usui in the early 20th century. It is a non-invasive complementary therapy that has been taught and used in the UK since the late 1900s, but eastern medicine has worked with this energy for thousands of years, recognising its flow through all living things. As time goes on, more and more variations of Reiki appear in the holistic field and they're all forms of energy healing.

Often referred to as an intelligent form of healing, Reiki is a wonderful complementary therapy in a personal wellness or healing program. It encourages and supports positive personal choices, such as improving diet, taking more exercise, devoting time for rest or leisure activities, and may reduce the need for alcohol and tobacco.

Regular Reiki treatments promote a calmer response to life’s challenges, reducing stress and anxiety. Reiki’s gentle energy is easily adapted to most medical conditions and may be used safely by people of all ages, including the newborn, pregnant mothers, surgical patients, the frail and the elderly, in any situation

What happens during a Reiki session?

During a Reiki session the recipient remains fully clothed, comfortably reclining on a massage couch or seated in a chair. The practitioner will place their hands on the recipient in various positions. Some practitioners use a non-touching technique where the hands are held a few centimetres away from the recipient's body.

The hands are usually kept still for a few minutes before moving to the next position, giving a general coverage of the head, the torso, knees and feet. These positions are never personally invasive and practitioners are always respectful of dignity and privacy.

The importance of relaxation

Relaxation is vital to wellbeing. To be and stay healthy, we need a good balance between rest and activity. The body is intelligent and generally manages to maintain an equilibrium, but with stress or anxiety the body tends to go into fight or flight mode. When this happens, the sympethetic nervous system produces adrenalin and cortisol and the body can't relax.

When the body is relaxed, the parasympathetic nervous system takes over which allows the body to repair. Which is where Reiki can help as a complementary therapy encouraging the body into deep relaxation, helping with a wide range of issues. And it has no negative side effects.

It can support the immune system, help with detoxification, aid oxygen uptake and absorption of nutrients, encourage wound repair, bring aboout pain relief, and offer a sense of wellbeing and calm. In this way, it can also help people cope more easily with side effects of conventional medical interventions such as chemotherapy, and help with things such as post-surgery pain and discomfort.

Distant or remote healing

Distant or remote healing is equally powerful for those comfortable with the idea that energy is not bound by time or space and healing can be sent anywhere in the world through the ether. Distant healing can be sent to people, situations, relationships, past lives, future events - in fact, its use is limited only by lack of imagination!
